Arthritis and Diabetes

Arthritis – mainly the inflammatory types – are autoimmune diseases where the immune system attacks the person’s own tissues. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Ankylosing spondylitis and Psoriatic arthritis are few of the inflammatory types of arthritis. These result in joint pain symptoms like inflammation, pain, stiffness and swelling at the joints.

Diabetes occurs due to insufficient production of insulin or inefficient usage of insulin. These hormonal imbalances can evolve into joint problems.

Types of Diabetes

Diabetes is categorised mainly into two types – Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes causes not to produce insulin which may be due to the immune system destroying the insulin producing cells of the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes has resistance to insulin due to which the pancreas reduces the secretion of insulin gradually. Diabetes causes change in the musculoskeletal system affecting joints and causing joint stiffness.

The link whether there is connection between Arthritis and Diabetes is speculative. The nature of the link and the connection is still unclear. However, it is seen that diabetic people are nearly twice likely to get affected with arthritis.

It is noticed that arthritis and diabetes have some common causes. Lifestyle behaviour is the main cause for both arthritis and diabetes. People with sedentary life style are thrice more likely to be prone to diseases. Both arthritis and diabetes are autoimmune diseases, and inflammation is one of the main indicator. Pancreas is affected due to diabetes while joint tissues are affected by inflammatory arthritis.

Managing both is one of the best solutions. The main risk factor is improper diet and obesity which is usually controlled by having proper diet and proper physical activity. Physical activity is suggested for both of these diseases. Exercises decrease the disease progression and the complications can be greatly reduced. Proper medication which prevents the increase of inflammatory bio-markers are used for treating both inflammatory arthritis and diabetes.
